Positive Youth Development
Positive Youth Development programs (PYD) are an effective public health response to negative health outcomes facing adolescents. PYD programs build capacity and empower youth. PYD programs assist youth to build personal and professional skills, improve health behaviors, and connect to their communities and environment.
To positively impact adolescent sexual and reproductive health, communities must provide culturally and developmentally appropriate, medically accurate sexual and reproductive health education along with easy access to reproductive health services. Incorporating principles of positive youth development in California health programs is a promising approach for achieving optimum sexual and reproductive health outcomes for youth. The ASHWG Positive Youth Development Principles outline core youth development principles and the underlying values of positive youth development.
