LGBTQ Youth in the Juvenile Justice System

Studies suggest that LGBTQ youth make up between 4 and 10 percent of the total detained youth population. Many of these youth have entered the system as a result of discrimination and lack of support due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. LGBTQ youth often experience discrimination or harassment by juvenile justice staff.
