Measures Must Be Taken To Prevent Depression In Adolescents

As one of the most common, unrecognized and untreated health problems among young people, tackling depression is a serious priority for countries worldwide. The psychiatric disorder causes serious social and educational problems for patients, as well as leading to increased risk of suicide and substance abuse. A review of a published article in The Lancet urges that more measures are needed to prevent depression in non-specialist settings, such as schools and communities.

Settlement puts community-based mental health services for foster care children on the Medi-Cal menu of services

Federal District Court Judge A. Howard Matz approved a landmark agreement between advocates and the state of California that will provide intensive home- and community-based mental health services for children in foster care or at risk of removal from their families. The agreement in the class-action suit Katie A. v. Bonta comes nine years after the case was first filed.

Many Teens Endure Sexual Harassment

Based on the first nationally representative survey in a decade of students in grades 7-12, the study, which was set for release this week by the American Association of University Women, found that 48 percent of nearly 2,000 students surveyed had experienced verbal, physical, or online sexual harassment at school during the 2010-11 school year.

Adolescents With Suicidal Ideation: Health Care Use and Functioning

This study suggests that improved screening for suicidal tendencies by primary care providers is needed.  The researchers found that only 13 percent of teens with suicidal thoughts received mental health visits through their healthcare network.

Comparing Racial/Ethnic Differences in Mental Health Service Use Among High-Need Subpopulations Across Clinical and School-Based Settings

Racial/ethnic differences in mental health service use among adolescents in clinic and school settings for three high-need populations are examined. Results indicate no racial/ethnic differences in school-based use contrasted with significant differences in clinical settings. Schools may be critical avenues for reduction of unmet mental health need among racial/ethnic minorities.

Major Depressive Episode and Treatment among Adolescents

This report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) finds that in 2007, an estimated 2.0 million youths aged 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode yet less than 40% of them received treatment for depression. Additionally, Adolescents with no health insurance coverage were much less likely receive treatment those with public or private insurance.
